Active aging for senior women

Everyday movements, also known as functional movements, can become an issue at any point, but most often start to crop up as we age. When getting up and down off the floor, getting in and out of a chair, pushing a heavy door open, going up stairs, or playing with grandchildren becomes challenging or painful, many people don’t realize that there is anything that can be done. They resign themselves to the idea that pain, lack of mobility and strength, is an inevitable part of aging. These are all issues that a well-planned exercise program designed for your body, can address and improve upon. You can build strength, mobility, balance, and body awareness at any age.

Online personal training for senior women with arthritis

For years people have thought that exercise exacerbates arthritis, but it is now clear that appropriate exercise is key for preventing and managing arthritis.

Low-impact exercise such as swimming, biking, water aerobics, and walking are great cardiovascular workouts for women with arthritis. But strength and mobility are of equal importance when trying to stay mobile and healthy with arthritis. When the muscles around the joint are strong and flexible it will help to improve range of motion and reduce pain, allowing women of all ages to live independent and fulfilling lives. Many people who suffer from arthritis are unsure of how to start an exercise program. By working with a certified personal trainer who specializes in senior fitness you can enjoy the benefits of weight lifting, yoga, Pilates, and general stretching while modifying for any joint pain.

According to the John Hopkins Arthritis Center “Physical activity is essential to optimizing both physical and mental health and can play a vital role in the management of arthritis. Regular physical activity can keep the muscles around affected joints strong, decrease bone loss and may help control joint swelling and pain. Regular activity replenishes lubrication to the cartilage of the joint and reduces stiffness and pain. Exercise also helps to enhance energy and stamina by decreasing fatigue and improving sleep.(ref 2) ”

Online personal training for senior women with osteoporosis

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis is common among postmenopausal women. 50% of women will break a bone in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. Which is a higher risk than having a heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer combined.

Exercise is a key part of a healthy lifestyle that promotes bone health as a way to prevent and manage osteoporosis and osteopenia. By strengthening the muscles, you build strength in the bones. Of particular importance is weight bearing exercises, strength or resistance training, as well as improving balance to prevent falls. Therefore, a workout routine for osteoporosis can include yoga, core strengthening, balancing exercises, weight lifting, resistance bands, as well as weight bearing cardiovascular exercises such as walking. However, not all movements are safe for people with osteoporosis. By working with a certified personal trainer in conjunction with your doctor you can develop strength and flexibility in a way that will be beneficial for your bones, joints, and quality of life.

How I came to work with senior women

One of my earliest memories is at the age of 5 when I realized my grandmother, a former modern dancer, woke up early every morning to meditate and do her exercises. I would try to follow along with my grandmother’s exercise routine. It astonished me even then, that she could touch her toes so easily!

Watching my grandmother continue her daily exercises, walks, and meditation into her 90’s had a large impact on my appreciation for the power of exercise and a healthy lifestyle as part of a meaningful and enjoyable life.

When I began teaching group fitness and private exercise classes in NYC I soon found that my appreciation and understanding of women’s bodies as they age gave me unique insight into helping older women.
