F.A.Q. for Diastasis Recti Training

Q: How long will my diastasis take to heal?

A: This depends on several factors such as how severe the separation is, and how fast your body naturally heals. The other part is how well you stick with the steps of the program. Typically people see a 50% reduction in the first six weeks. After that initial improvement, progress tends to slow down and this is where it varies a lot person to person. On average the gap will be closed around 3 months, for some it might take 6 months or more to heal.

Q: What are the steps for the diastasis program?

A: The program for healing your diastasis consists of three parts:

  1. Functional movements and posture (how you get in and out of bed, pick up your kids, etc.)
  2. Wearing the diastasis splint
  3. Practicing the diastasis specific exercises

Q: How often will I meet with Morgana?

A: The three month diastasis recti program includes meeting once a week for 30 minutes for the first month, then every other week for the next two months. Some people need additional sessions which can be purchased separately.

Q: What is a belly band/binder/splint for?

A: A diastasis specific belly binder is a band that you wear around your belly that helps bring your muscles back together. It is not a compression band and is not going to smoosh or compress your belly (which turns off your abdominal muscles), but rather it is going to help approximate (or bring closer together) your abdominal muscles so that the connective tissue can heal and the muscles can strengthen in the correct position. It is safe to wear during pregnancy and postpartum.

Q: Do I need to wear a belly band/binder/splint?

A: If you have a smaller diastasis you do not need to wear the belly band. However, it is very helpful for speeding up the process. In some cases people are unable or unwilling to wear the diastasis splint, in these cases modifications can be made and the healing process may be slower, but is usually possible.

Q: Where do I get the diastasis splint?

A: I recommend the Tupler diastasis splint.

Q: What exercises do I need to avoid while healing my diastasis?

A: We will go over this in more detail during your sessions, but essentially you want to avoid the following:

  • Crunching forward
  • Back bending
  • Deep twists
  • High impact
  • Plank positions
  • Swimming (water aerobics is fine)

Q: My kids are grown up, is it too late to heal my abdominal separation?

A: It is never too late to heal a diastasis recti. I have clients in their 70’s who have healed their abdominal separation

Q: How much time per day/week do I need to commit to the program?

The program involves being mindful of your movements throughout the day and wearing the belly band as much as possible. In addition, you will aim to do about 15-30 minutes a day of diastasis specific exercises.
